Earning from a blog can be achieved through advertising revenue from ads you place there, or through affiliate commissions made from sales of products you promote.

Actually creating a blog can be done in a flash with services like Blogger from Google, or you can set up a blog on your own with applications like Wordpress. With software like this, and other similar applications, you can set up a blog in minutes. Setting up your own blog site has it's advantages, chief of which is that you have full control over it.

Once a blog is setup, you then need to get people to see it. Without visitors, you can't make money. Before you even think about creating the blog, you should carry out topic or keyword research. It helps to have your blog on the first page of the search engines. One way to achieve this is to pick topics that have a good amount of searches and relatively few competitors. There are many tools that will help you do this.

One such tool which I like to use is the Google Adwords Keyword Suggestion tool. This will tell you the volume of monthly searches done for your chosen keyword or topic and will even suggest other topics for you to consider. It's advantageous to pick topics that you either already know about, or can see yourself getting interested in, as it's much more fun to write about such topics.

Once you've found an interesting keyword that has a decent amount of searches, just type it into Google with quotes around it, eg: "britney spears", and see how many competitors exist. If there are less than 5,000 then that is a topic that you stand a good chance of getting to the first page of Google's results with.

If all this sounds a bit too much like hard work, then there are other tools that will speed up the task for you. If you'd prefer the convenience that the other tools provide, you must double check that the keywords they suggest actually get searched. (The best way to do this is run a Google Adwords campaign with those keywords and see how many impressions they get. The number of impressions is a good indicator of how many searches are done).

From experience, there are thousands of topics that have less than 5,000 competitors in Google's search results. Finding them can be quite enjoyable. A bit like panning for gold. When you find such gems, it is quite feasible to set up a blog on that topic, (with free software), and get traffic and earnings from it in a very short space of time.
